The symbol on his helmet is one of the Vextherian symbols for death. 


During the war, Vextheria reluctantly used chemical weaponry to hold the Calspef front, the republic would not forget this
so they too started using chemical weapons as well. Leading to the use of the Firespitter which was invented by a small time engineer working for a chemical plant five years before; although the weapon wasn't very effective when dealing with soldiers, it did flush many out of their hiding places and into the open to be gun down, but it's greatest impact was the psychological effects it had on the Vextherians, who were terrified of it. Considering the weapon an evil inhuman killing tool, that made death a very painful experience.

Needless to say that both sides capitalized on the fear with posters like this Vextherian one here. 

From this point on however, the most hated person in one's army was a flame trooper and when seen by the enemy they became main target of enemy gunfire and subject to mutilation by the victorious foe.
